What does the phrase "The Second Superpower" mean? According to this article ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/30087.html ), its meaning has been re-written in a kind of homage to George Orwell. The (longish) article "Anti-war slogan coined, repurposed and Googlewashed... in 42 days" says the phrase "The Second Superpower" originally refered to the power of anti-war protesters and general public opinion across the world. The "first" superpower being of course the USA. However, if you Google for "The Second Superpower" now ( http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22Second+Superpower%22&btnG=Google+Search ), you get links to an article which uses the phrase with a different meaning . References to this article "The Second Superpower Rears its Beautiful Head" has now suplanted those to the original meaning, due, the Register article suggests, to an interaction between a few "A-list" blogs and the Google ranking algorithm. |
